I learned today that frosting is either completely stubborn or wildly overenthusiastic. There is apparently no in-between. I volunteered to help decorate cupcakes for the bake sale because cupcakes deserve pretty little swirls on top. Mrs. Harper handed me a piping bag and told me to start gently.

The frosting disagreed. At first, nothing came out no matter how hard I squeezed. Then suddenly WAY too much came out all at once and landed everywhere except where I wanted it.

The cupcake. The table. My fingers.Β One particularly ambitious swirl somehow ended up on my sleeve.Β Mrs. Harper said I was using too much pressure.Β I said the frosting should have communicated that sooner.

She told me to loosen my grip and let it come out steadily instead of trying to force it. Which sounded suspiciously like frosting therapy.Β The annoying part is that it worked.

Once I stopped fighting with it, the swirls came out smoother. Slower. Neater. They landed exactly where they were supposed to instead of exploding into sugary chaos.

By the end I had a whole tray of pretty cupcakes and only a small amount of frosting in my hair. I think that’s what success looks like.

The frosting would probably disagree.

XOXO,Β
